A modern Gravel Garden 2001 - Silver Medal

The garden was basically a modern garden using contemporary materials such as alloy coated metalwork alongside more traditional materials like dry stone walling and wood.

The pathways are composed of crushed sandstone hogging in order to harmonise with the hues present in the dry stone wall. Railway sleepers have been chosen for ease of construction, their durability and ability to withstand all types of weather conditions. Alloy coloured metalwork creates bold lines to highlight certain components of the garden i.e. the seating and water feature. The silver metal is a contrast to the green foliage to elicit a contemporary feel. Alloy coated metal brackets are used on the supporting uprights to allow a blending together of the traditional and modern materials. The pool acts as a focal point, drawing the eye as the pergola is entered. The seating in the pergola consists of the same wood and metalwork as the bench at the front of the garden. Railway sleepers make up the floor of the pergola, like the seating this preserves the unity of materials used within the garden. The planting of the two levels differs. The lower level is composed of large sweeping blocks of colour, whilst the upper level is mostly concentrating on green planting and use various shades and textures to create interest.

The garden has no particular function except as a place for relaxation. The lower level seat is in the midst of vibrant colours that may stimulate a jaded mind. Whereas the sheltered seat in the pergola lends itself to a more quiet contemplation.
