The Arid Patch 2000 - Bronze Medal

The objective was to reproduce a Mediterranean atmosphere in a modern English garden.

Bright annuals and perennials lavish colour echoes an English 'cottage' garden herbaceous border. Similarly vivid annuals spilling from two window boxes. The pool and spiky evergreens create a contrasting cool area. Alloy water spouts add a modern touch. A wooden/alloy bench sits between hot and cool aspects, sampling both. A central mosaic sun symbol is the focal point of the garden. It aims to produce a visual representation of the theme. Alloy coated metal creates strong lines to demarcate the planted areas, pathway and mosaic. Its reflective quality emphasises the bright aspect of the garden. Crushed sandstone (pathway) and red Cheshire reclaimed brick (pond and 'house') further enhance the warm theme. A sheet of blue glass stones and a blue wooden fence aim to reflect the Mediterranean sky.
